How effective was infantry small arms fire against low flying aircraft in the early 20th Century?

Towards the start of 'Dunkirk' one or two soldiers attempt to fire at the incoming dive bombers while they targeted the crowds of soldiers on the beach. Obviously a few soldiers armed with bolt-action rifles are unlikely to cause any damage to the aircraft would a hail of bullets fired upwards by the hundreds of soldiers on the beach have created any deterrent against the bombers.

Are there any known examples of infantry managing to damage or destroy incoming aircraft using just the small arms they had at their disposal?
