What were American reactions to the news of the existence of the atomic bomb?

I don't think I've ever heard how the news was delivered to G.I.s and the American public about what had happened at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

How did people react? Did they understand the magnitude of the events? Was there a lot of confusion?

How long was it before the public was informed? Did the news of how it happened come at the same time as the news of the Japanese surrender?

Was knowledge of the theoretical power of atomic weapons common at the time, or was this a totally new thing people had to grow to understand?
